The next revision of all 3 parts of the RCD’s “mother” standard, ISO 12217, began on 22nd January 2024, at the Dusseldorf Boatshow.  HPiVS’ CEO, Alasdair Reay, has been appointed as ISO Project Leader for sail boats (parts 2 & 3) but also attended part 1.  The meetings, spread over 5 days, considered the many comments submitted by the industry to ICOMIA’s “improvement list”, over the years.  There were also some wider discussions about the ‘design’ of the standards. No firm decisions were taken at the meeting but there appears to be consensus that the stability assessment of sailing multihulls needs its own ‘part 4’.

We shall see but one thing is certain: the standards will be far clearer to read and interpret after this update.

Anyone with feedback or comments regarding ISO 12217 are encouraged to contact HPiVS if they wish the committee to consider their concerns or suggestions.
